Mouse Information

Mouse, the name of a number of species of little animals, of which the most familiar is the domestic mouse. There are more than one hundred twenty-five species of the genus, which includes also the rats. The harvest mouse, the smallest of quadrupeds, constructs a little globular nest of grass, entwined round and supported by the stalks of the corn or wheat. In this he spends his winter asleep. The common field mouse is a dusky brown, with a darker strip along the middle of the back, while the tail is of a white color beneath. The short-tailed field mouse, or meadow mouse is not a true mouse, but is one of the voles. On the back it is of a reddish-brown color, inclining to gray; the under parts are lighter, or ashy-brown, and the tail and feet are of a dusky-gray color. The dormouse also is of a different family from the true mice. The jumping mice of America are more closely related to the Jerboas than to the true mice.
